Claude Debussy’s Syrinx was composed in 1913 as an incidental musical piece in a play written by a friend. In Greek mythology Syrinx was a beautiful wood nymph pursued by the god Pan. To escape him she ran to the river and asked the river nymphs for help. They then transformed her into hollow water reeds. Pan, hearing the haunting sound of the wind blowing through the reeds, cuts the reeds and makes them into musical pipes. Syrinx is a short piece for solo flute that is usually included in any flautist’s repertoire.
Benedikt Brydern is an award-winning composer for film and the concert hall. Bebop for Beagles was commissioned as a tribute to a couple’s pet beagles whose life was full of time spent just hanging out relaxing, to frantic playful moments, and waiting for treats. The mini-suite consists of 7 movements with Hoover’s Holiday, Cookies in Space, Flea Control: Mission Impossible, The Kitchen Blues, and others.
Ludwig van Beethoven’s Serenade for Flute, Violin and Viola was written around 1801 and is a very light and entertaining piece; more like earlier salon music than the music Beethoven was composing at the time.
