Description
‘6.9 on the Richter Scale’ is a film that provides ‘An earthquake of laughter.’
By Special Contributor, Lekha Shankar
After an eventful year of vibrant, unique, thought-provoking films from countries as diverse as Guatemala, Nigeria, Chile, Switzerland, the 2024 Contemporary World Film Series at TK Park, comes to an end, with a unique comedy from Romania called ‘ 6.9 on the Richter scale’.
The strange title refers to a term in earthquake technology, and the earthquake has multi-layered meanings in the film. The protagonist, a theatre actor, has constant nightmares about impending earthquakes. In addition, his own marriage is shaking at its seams like an earthquake. Apart from his overwrought wife, he has to contend with a glib-talking father who suddenly appears in his life, after abandoning him as a child.
There are several incidents of situational comedy, which are wild, hilarious, unexpected, unmitigated.
‘Comedy is irreverent’- said the Director of the film, and the movie is proof of that.
The film becomes a musical drama at the end, when the actor plays the lead in the famed Greek love story Orpheus and Eurydice. This adds one more dimension to this multi-dimensional comedy.
The film was nominated for eight of Romania’s top GOPO Awards and won five of them. It
was also very successful at the box-office.
The film screening is supported by the Embassy of Romania, who will host a Reception of
snacks and drinks, after the screening.
The Ambassador of Romania H.E. Ms Daniela-Brindusa BAZAVAN will introduce the film.
