Jim Thompson Art Center, together with DC Collection proudly present a screening program with post-screening talk by Dr. Disaphol Chansiri and Dr. Gridthiya Gaweewong about the award-winning documentary Herb & Dorothy (2008). The inspiring story of Herb and Dorothy Vogel, a New York couple who defied all odds to become two of the most influential art collectors of the 20th century.
Beginning in the early 1960s, when minimalist and conceptual art were still emerging movements, Herb and Dorothy Vogel used their modest incomes to acquire works that were both affordable and small enough to fit in their apartment. Over more than three decades, the Vogels’ keen eye and curatorial vision led them to assemble a collection of over 4,700 works by renowned artists such as Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and Donald Judd. What makes their story unique is their unwavering passion for art over financial gain, and their decision to donate much of their collection to public institutions, ensuring access for future generations.
This documentary highlights their dedication to supporting artists, their deep understanding of contemporary art, and the relationships they built within the art community. The screening will provide art lovers and aspiring collectors with a fascinating glimpse into how the Vogels’ love of art transformed both their lives and the art world.
* This program is a part of the exhibition, ‘Fragmented Reality : Selected Artworks From DC Collection’.
