Since the pandemic and military coup, the existence of the art market, livelihoods of the artists and the philosophy of Myanmar contemporary art scene has become an illusionary diaspora. People fled, artists migrated, and the conversations were lost in between. The smallest string between the country and the international community was once again torn apart. No matter how fast the contemporary art world is shifting, the long presence of local art market delusion resurfaced once again in the midst of chaos, younger generations being ignored.
In his talk, Sid will give a brief overview of these unheard exhibitions, artists, and conversations during 2020-2024 in Myanmar, in comparison to the Myanmar artists from the international art world. With specific examples from his own curatorial practice, he will lay out and discuss the challenges of fast-growing media culture, disconnected generation, lack of art education, quality of work and limitations.
